From Old Turkic toprak, from Old Turkic topur- ("to dry out") + suffix -ik, from Proto-Turkic *topra-k. Cognate with Azeri torpaq, Tatar tufraq, Uyghur tupraq, Yakut toburaχ, Kazakh topıraq, Chuvash tăpra. Related with Mongolian tobrag/tobarag ("dust"). The word shares a common root with Turkish toz (“dust”).
