tươm

Vietnamese

Pronunciation

Etymology 1

From Proto-Vietic *ʔa-saːmʔ ~ *p-saːmʔ (blood), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɟhaam ~ *ɟhiim (blood); cognate with Bahnar pham, Pacoh aham, Khasi snam/'nam, Khmer ឈាម (chiəm), Mon ဆီ (c'him), Car Nicobarese ma-hām. The sense of "blood" was replaced by *t-muːʔ (> máu) in Vietnamese, Muong, Tho and Thavung. The change from *-ʔ to the ngang tone is also irregular. Based on the Vietnamese and Muong words, Ferlus reconstructed Proto-Northern Vietic saːm ("to ooze"). He also suggested a connection with rướm, where the sound change from *-ʔ to the sắc tone is regular.
