From Ancient Greek σύν (sún, “with”) + ᾠόν (ōión, “egg”) (although the v is from or influenced by Latin ovum (“egg”), as synovial fluid resembles the white of an egg.

- The soft tissue which lines the non-cartilaginous surfaces within joints with cavities (synovial joints). It may emit a joint-lubricating fluid called synovial fluid or simply, synovia.
