From Proto-Balto-Slavic *śwō, *śō (compare Latvian suns, Lithuanian šuõ), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwṓ. Cognate to Armenian շուն (šun), Sanskrit श्वन् (śvā́), English hound and the Latin canis (“dog”).
