Uncertain. Possibly from Vulgar Latin *disperdicāre, from Latin disperdere[1], or from Vulgar Latin *dispergicāre, iterative of Latin dispergere[2], or alternatively from Vulgar Latin *exprecāre ("drive into ruin"), from Latin ex- + precāri, present active infinitive of precor[3].
