From Latin sōlitārius (“lonely”) (compare Spanish soltero, Portuguese solteiro). Less likely derived from solt[1], from the past participle of Old Catalan soldre, from Latin solvere (past participle solutus (“unbound, released, free, at large”)). Compare the doublet solitari.
