From Old Turkic [script needed] (sirke, “acid of grape”), from Proto-Turkic *sirke (“vinegar”), possibly from Proto-Altaic *sū̀re (“sour, acid, stinking”).[1] Akin to Persian سرکه (serke), according to Doerfer the direction of a possible borrowing is not clear.[2]
