Etymology

. Coromines[1] proposed that it was a borrowing from Arabic, from Persian, but Corrientes[2] considers that his etymology was based just in phonetics; the existence of places whose names are derived with suffixes that were seldom productive in the second millennium, as Saramagoso and Zaramacedo, makes the Arab etymology unlikely and points to a Latin or pre-Latin origin.
