Etymology
rutten + -a, Old Swedish rutna, rotna, same as Danish rådne, Norwegian råtne, Icelandic rotna. The adjective rutten (“rotten”) originated as the past participle of a different verb than this one, one of strong conjugation. Both verbs ultimately relate to röta (“rot”). From Old Norse rotna.
