From Middle Dutch rike, rijc, from Old Dutch *rīki, from Proto-Germanic *rīkijaz (“mighty”), from *rīks, from Proto-Celtic *rīxs (“king”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃rḗǵs (“king”).
Cognate with Low German rik, West Frisian ryk, German reich, English rich, Danish rig, Swedish rik, Gothic 𐍂𐌴𐌹𐌺𐌴𐌹𐍃 (reikeis). The Indo-European root is also the source of Latin rēx.
