Etymology
Borrowed from Vulgar Latin *potestāre, from potestās (“power, ability”), whence Albanian pushtet (“power”).[1] Cognate with Medieval Latin potestare (“to control”), Old French poëster (“to exercise power, to govern, to dominate; to put in power”), Italian podestare.
The dialectal forms poshtroj, pështroj are influenced by shtroj.[1]
