Etymology

From English punch, probably via German Punsch. Alternative historical forms: punšis, punčis. First attested use – 1803.[1] In English from Hindi पाँच (pāñć, “five”) denoting five ingredients the drink is supposedly made of, ultimately cognate with Latvian pieci among others.
