From Old Portuguese pestana, of uncertain origin: probably from a pre-Roman substrate of Iberia *pĭstannā.[1] Cognate with Portuguese pestana, Mirandese pestanha, Asturian pestaña, Spanish pestaña and Catalan pestanya.
