Within the controversial Nostratic theory, Kuiper suggests a Nostratic root *p'at'a ("to beat") as the source of this and Proto-Semitic *√p˖t˖t (to break into small pieces), Proto-Kartvelian *petk- (to explode, to beat (of heart)), and Proto-Altaic *p'at'V (compare Proto-Tungusic *pāt- ("to strike, hit"), Proto-Turkic *at- (to beat)).[1]
