Etymology
Within the controversial Nostratic theory, Kuiper suggests a Nostratic root *p'at'a ("to beat") as the source of this and Proto-Semitic *√p˖t˖t (“to break into small pieces”), Proto-Kartvelian *petk- (“to explode, to beat (of heart)”), and Proto-Altaic *p'at'V (“compare Proto-Tungusic *pāt- ("to strike, hit"), Proto-Turkic *at- (“to beat”)”).[1]
