From Proto-Finno-Ugric *omti (“cavity”) or *oŋti, the same root from which onsi (“hollow, space”) derives. Cognate with Veps onduz, Hungarian odú (“haunt, animal hole”) and Erzya ундо (undo, “hole, cavity”)[1]
