From Old Polish następny, from Proto-Slavic *nastǫpьnъ, from *nastǫpъ or directly from *nastǫpiti, *nastǫpati + *-ьnъ, from *na- + *stǫpiti. Equivalent to następ, nastąpić + -ny, na- + stąpić.
