From Old Irish nél (compare Scottish Gaelic neul). Cognate with Welsh niwl; a Celtic loanword either from Vulgar Latin *nībulus, a modification of Latin nūbilus (“cloudy”), or from Proto-Germanic *nebulaz (“cloud, mist”).
