Possibly a compound formation from mbi + thej 'to turn, twist', a variant of thyej . Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *mer 'to plait, bind; rope'. Compare Old High German bardi (bardi, “shield”), Italian barda (barda, “horse harness”), Greek βροχός (vrochós, “cord”).
