Etymology

From earlier mazana, from Vulgar Latin (Iberian dialect) mattiana, shortened from Latin mala matiana, a kind of apple, literally apples of Matius. Matius, a friend of Caesar, was a Roman horticulturalist and author of cookbooks.

Cognate with Portuguese maçã.
