made in Japan

English

Adjective

made in Japan (not comparable)

  1. Used other than with a figurative or idiomatic meaning: Manufactured in Japan.
  2. (idiomatic, dated) [c. 1950s-1970s] Of poor or low quality, especially if cheaply manufactured in East Asia.

Usage notes

The quality of Japanese products has improved dramatically since the mid 20th century and they are now generally considered to be of usually very high quality. Thus the idiomatic uses of the phrase are now considered archaic.
