Uncertain. Possibly linked to Latin messis (“harvest”)[1][2][3], as August is a month of harvest. Several other regional Romance languages have folk names with similar meanings or origins for months around this time of year. The variant form măselar also coincides with a separate word referring to a certain plant or a part of an object such as a beam or rafter, and derived from măsea.
