From French khédive, from Ottoman Turkish خدیو (ḫediv, ḫıdiv), from Persian خدیو (xadēw, xidēw, “lord, master, king”),[1] from Bactrian χοαδηο (xoadēo, “lord”), calque of Ancient Greek αὐτοκράτωρ (autokrátōr).
