From Old Portuguese janeiro, janeyro, from Vulgar Latin *jan(u)airu, *jenuarius, from Latin iānuārius, from the name of the god Iānus (“Janus”). Compare Spanish enero.

Usage notes
In Brazilian Portuguese, the names of months were usually not capitalized. But in Portugal they were. The Portuguese Language Orthographic Agreement of 1990 abolished their capitalization.
