Etymology

From Old Frisian hiōda, hiūdega. A contraction of the instrumental phrase *hiū dega (this day), from Proto-Germanic *hiz (from which also hy) + *dagaz (from which dei).

Cognate with Old English hēodæg, Old Saxon hiudu, hūdigu, Dutch heden (also huidig), German heute.
