From Old High German gruoni, from Proto-Germanic *grōniz, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʰreh₁- (“to grow”). Cognate with German grün, Low German gröön, Dutch groen, North Frisian green, English green, Icelandic grænn, Swedish grön. Compare also Proto-Slavic *grěnъ (“green”).
