From Vulgar Latin *gluttus, from Latin glutō, gluttō, variant of glutiō, gluttiō (“I swallow”), from gula (“throat”, whence also gola), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷel- (“throat”). Cognate to French glouton, English glutton.
