From Galician-Portuguese falcatrua, used c. 1285 by the Galician author Airas Nunes. Of obscure origin; the second theme is possibly related to truán (rogue), of Celtic origin.

Cognate with Portuguese falcatrua and Asturian falcatrúa, francatrúa.
