Singularized plural of an earlier *eshkë, from Proto-Albanian *aiškā, from Proto-Indo-European *oid-skā- (compare Old Church Slavonic исто (isto, kidney), Old Norse eista (testicle)), from *h₂eyd- (to swell), whence Ancient Greek οἰδέω (oidéō).[1].
