Singularized plural of an earlier *eshkë, from Proto-Albanian *aiškā, from Proto-Indo-European *oid-skā- (compare Old Church Slavonic исто (isto, “kidney”), Old Norse eista (“testicle”)), from *h₂eyd- (“to swell”), whence Ancient Greek οἰδέω (oidéō).[1].
