Etymology
From Middle French, from Latin epitome, epitoma, from Ancient Greek ἐπιτομή (epitomḗ, “an abridgment, also a surface-incision”), from ἐπιτέμνω (epitémnō, “I cut upon the surface, cut short, abridge”), from ἐπί (epí) + τέμνω (témnō, “to cut”).
