From an older form ênde (attested in F.Bardhi), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂énti (“facing opposite, near, in front of, before”). Compare Old Norse eða (“and”), Danish end (“but”), Swedish än (“yet, but”), Icelandic enn (“still, yet”), German und (“and”).
