From Proto-Slavic *duplja, from *duplo, from *dupa. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dʰéwbus (“deep”). Cognate to Old Church Slavonic дъбрь (dŭbrĭ, “valley”), Lithuanian dubùs (“deep, hollow”), Albanian det (“sea”), Welsh dwfn (“deep”).
