From Proto-Slavic *drugъ, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰrowgʰos. Cognate with Lithuanian draũgas (“friend”), Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌳𐍂𐌰𐌿𐌷𐍄𐍃 (gadrauhts, “warrior”) and Old English drihten.
