Etymology

Derived from dìdis “big, large”. Etymology unclear. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *deyh₂-, related to Homeric Greek δέατο (“he showed himself”), δῆλος (“visible”); Vedic Sanskrit dīdā́ya (“he/she/it shines”).[1]
