Cognate with Old High German chastanāri (“encloser”), Old High German kasto (“box, case”) (Modern German Kasten), Dutch kast (“cupboard, case”), Gothic 𐌺𐌰𐍃 (kas, “vessel, container”), Old Norse ker (“vessel, container”).
