From Ottoman Turkish برج (burc, “zodiac, constellation, tower”), from Arabic بُرْج (burj), from Classical Syriac ܒܘܪܓܐ (burgāʾ, “tower, columbarium”), from Ancient Greek πύργος (púrgos) or Latin burgus, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerǵʰ- (“high”) (compare English borough).
