Attested since circa 1600. Probably an alteration of older (Old Norse) bœki (whence bæki), perhaps influenced by Danish bøg. Ultimately from Proto-Germanic *bōkō, *bōkijǭ (“beech”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂ǵos (“beech”).
