From Old French Theobald, Tibaut and partially Old English Þēodbald; both ultimately derived from Proto-Germanic *Þeudōbalþaz. Common in the Middle Ages under various spellings in the archaic pronunciation. After it became obsolete a spelling pronunciation took over.
