Sino-Vietnamese word from 泰, from Thai ไทย (tai) + 蘭 (Lan), from English -land; Lan was added by analogy with names of European countries, such as Ba Lan (“Poland”) or Hà Lan (“Netherlands”); compare Chinese 泰國 (Thái quốc).
