Finnish
Etymology
There are several theories:
- from *šāma-, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *źemē (“ground”), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰéǵʰōm
- from *ćoma, originally a word meaning "human", ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dʰéǵʰōm
- now outdated theories suggest derivation from suomaa ("fen land") or suoniemi ("fen cape")
Cognates include Estonian Soome and Northern Sami Suopma, and perhaps English Sami as well as Finnish Häme (Tavastia) and Finnish hämäläinen (Tavastian).
