     The Finnic languages show that the primitive people were clad only in the skins of animals since the skin or hide of an animal is kut in Wotiak, ked in Mordwin and kete in Suomi.

Etymology

There are several theories:

• from *šāma-, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *źemē (“ground”), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰéǵʰōm
• from *ćoma, originally a word meaning "human", ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dʰéǵʰōm
• now outdated theories suggest derivation from suomaa ("fen land") or suoniemi ("fen cape")

Cognates include Estonian Soome and Northern Sami Suopma, and perhaps English Sami as well as Finnish Häme (Tavastia) and Finnish hämäläinen (Tavastian).
