Etymology
From Persian هندوکش (hindūkuš, hendukoš, “Mountains of the Indus / of India”). According to 19th century reports also interpreted it as compound of هندو (hendu) + کش (koš-) in popular etymology, which would mean "Hindu-slayer".
Attested in English from the 18th century.
