Etymology
Known as Cotrone from the Middle Ages until 1928, when the name was changed back to one closer to the original Latin name for the town, Croton or Croto, (genitive Crotonis), ultimately from Ancient Greek Κρότων (Krótōn) (Kroton). It is still called Cutroni in the local Sicilian dialect.
