From Ancient Greek Σελεδίβα (Seledíba), from Pali sīhaḷadīva, sīeḷedīva, or from Sanskrit सिंहल (siṃhala, “Sinhala”) (from सिंह (siṃha, “lion”)) + द्वीप (dvīpa, “island”).
