From Old High German bīa, from Proto-Germanic *bijō. Cognate with Luxembourgish Bei, West Frisian bij, English bee, Icelandic bý, Swedish bi. From the same Proto-Indo-European root as Italian fuco (“drone (male bee)”), Irish beach (“bee”), Lithuanian bitė (“bee”).
