Etymology
From Middle High German bine, from Old High German bini, from Proto-Germanic *biniz, representing an -n- variant of Germanic *bijō. Cognate with Bavarian Bein (“bee”), Old Saxon bini. Compare from *bijō the form Bei(e) in many dialects (Luxembourgish Bei (“bee”), Alemannic Beie (“bee”)).
