Etymology
From Proto-Slavic *bělъgordъ. Composed of Ekavian Serbo-Croatian bȅo (“white”) (from Proto-Slavic *bělъ) and grȃd (“city”) (from Proto-Slavic *gordъ). The city is named after the white wall of the fortress that enclosed the city. See also Biograd, Бе́лгород (Bélgorod), Białogard.
