Uncertain origin, probably Germanic: al-, from Proto-Germanic *allaz (“all”), and -ōd-, from Proto-Germanic *audaz (“wealth”)[1] or ali-, from Proto-Germanic *aljaz (“other”), and -ōd-, from Proto-Germanic *audaz (“wealth”)[2]. Cognates include French Élodie and Alodie.
