From a Germanic given name which contains Proto-Germanic *ad- (noble) and Proto-Germanic *mēr- (famous). ad- is a short form of Proto-Germanic *adal (noble) as in Adolph, Albert etc. See also Old High German adal and English Elmer. For mǣr-/mār-, see Old English mære.
