From a Germanic given name which contains Proto-Germanic *ad- (“noble”) and Proto-Germanic *mēr- (“famous”). ad- is a short form of Proto-Germanic *adal (“noble”) as in Adolph, Albert etc. See also Old High German adal and English Elmer. For mǣr-/mār-, see Old English mære.
