Etymology
From Old Danish and Old Norse. The suffix -hus was originally -os (“river mouth”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁éh₃(o)s (“mouth”) and it is related to Icelandic ós (“river mouth”) and Latin os (“mouth”). Aar- is originally an old genitive ār of Modern Danish å (“small river”). That word stems from Proto-Germanic *ahwō and Proto-Indo-European *h₂ekʷeh₂ (“water”).
