- Occurring in surnames, stra derives from the suffix -ster (-sater “inhabitant”) + -a (genitive plural ending). Often the first part of the -stra-surname is a short form of a place name (Dijk from Surhuizumerdijk)[1]
Similar compound surnames are: Terpstra, Zijlstra.
