Etymology

First attested after 1372 in the Old Hungarian era. Formed from the connection of the ablativus suffix -l and the suffix -g.

Suffix

-lag

  1. (adverb suffix) -ly. Added to a word to form an adverb. Today it is mainly used with adjectives suffixed with -i and present participles. In the past, it was added to different parts of speech.

Usage notes

  • (adverb suffix) Harmonic variants:
    -lag is added to back vowel words
    -leg is added to front vowel words
